Dean Gash

Gash-th

Born and raised in a small suburb of the Midwestern industrial town of Wichita KS, Dean Gash grew up in the suburb of Derby. For those of you that know Derby KS, they call it one of the best places to raise a family. What they won’t tell you is that it has a huge drug problem, specifically prescription drugs like Xanax, and of course weed. Gash began his musical career at 5 years old, when he was forced to take piano lessons; by 8 he was writing his own songs on the piano. After giving up the piano during middle school because it wasn’t cool enough, he gave up music altogether to focus on more important things, like weed, alcohol, and girls. He picked up the pen again during High School and never looked back.

The classic underachiever, Gash spent most of his days in high school writing in notebooks, and rhyming in his head. After failing out of college, twice, and being arrested for selling marijuana, he decided to stick with writing songs and work to save money for studio equipment. It was during these failed college years that he joined with New Life Records and Bilistic, who gave him a place to release his pent up anger at his own failings, and record for free. During this period he released a mix tape on his own, a mix tape with his partner in crime Xcuses, and was featured on New Life Records nationally distributed album “New Life Ryders.”

He quickly became Bilistic’s right hand man, and opened numerous shows with him including TechN9ne, Bubba Sparks, the Ying Yang Twins, and even accompanied him to MTV Spring Break in Panama Beach Florida. After the death of his father in 2007, Gash and New Life Records had a bit of a falling out, and Gash decided to go his own way. He used the money he received from his father’s life insurance to pay for his recording studio, and spent a few years dabbling in all sorts of music. On his path to finding his voice, he decided to rejoin the college ranks, began attending KU and made peace with Bilistic and rejoined New Life Records. His freshman album is due at the end of summer, just in time for his senior year at the University of Kansas, and this promising young talent intends to make the best of his final year of college, both in the classroom and in the streets of Lawrence KS.
